White teeth are always in style. Such a true statement and something that used to keep me up at night haha! In a world in which white straight teeth are admired, I was feeling very self-conscious about mine. It started last year when my dentist mentioned that I was developing some staining in between my teeth and closer to my gums. While he didn’t think I needed immediate treatment for it, he said to keep an eye on the issue in between visits, which I did. I started brushing and flossing more than usual and stopped drinking straight black coffee, and I also started looking into teeth whitening systems. The staining stopped getting worse but it was still there.
Then, over the summer, I got approached by Smile Brilliant to review their at-home whitening system. At the time, I had already done some research about teeth whitening treatments but had not looked into at-home kits. At first, I was apprehensive because I was under the impression that a lot of at-home products oversell results with minimal effort. I also did not want to end up like Ross in that one episode of Friends haha!
However, I did not have enough knowledge about this type of treatment, so I started doing some research. First, I went to their site and read every single page I could find about the product, ingredients, usage, and results. My husband reminded me that a friend of ours had used the Smile Brilliant whitening kit, so I contacted her and asked for her honest opinion. She had a positive experience with the products and while it took commitment and time, she was happy with her results. Finally, I asked my dentist. I was expecting him to tell me I needed the professional teeth whitening at his office, but after reviewing the kit, he said it could potentially benefit me as long as I was carefully following the instructions. With all of this information in mind, I agreed to use the Smile Brilliant whitening kit system and write an in-depth review of the product.
The Impression Trays Process
Once I agreed to review the product, my order was placed and I received the package within a week. Each teeth whitening kit includes two impression trays, 3 sets of impression materials (3 catalyst-paste containers and 3 base-paste containers,) envelope with paid postage for the impression trays, consent card, and the professional teeth whitening gel and desensitizing gel. I received 4 syringes of each gel which equals 16-18 applications. However, I noticed on their website that they offer three different kits depending on the severity of the stains.
I made my impressions as soon as I received the kit.
To make the impressions, I first brushed my teeth. Then, I mixed one base and one catalyst container until it blended into a solid blue paste that looked and felt a lot like playdough. Then I put the material in one of the impressions trays, making sure the whole tray was covered and pressed the tray onto my teeth. The instructions made it clear that I shouldn’t bite into the paste. Finally, I kept the tray inside my mouth for 2-3 minutes and carefully removed it making sure that I didn’t scrape the material when I took it out. I repeated the same steps for the lower teeth. They sent me an extra set of materials, which was fortunate because I was trying to film while doing it, so the first mixture got hard before I pressed onto my teeth. At least I got a fun keepsake haha.
I washed the impressions and waited until they dried off before I popped them in the bubbler envelope they included to send the trays back to the lab. In addition, I had to fill out and sign a consent card included in the kit and mail it along with the impression trays.
Because I was traveling out of the country within two weeks of receiving the kit, I was worried I wouldn’t get the trays on time. However, I got my custom made trays 7 business days after I sent my impressions.
The Teeth Whitening Process
I found the instructions for the teeth whitening process really simple to follow. My only issue with it was that I could do it mainly at night after dinner and before bed. It takes up to 3 hours for each application, so I needed enough time for each session. Also, I was not supposed to eat or drink anything for a few hours after each application, which made it difficult for me to do it during the day.
Additionally, before I started the treatment, I learned that the whitening process timeline depends a lot on sensitivity levels. In my case, it would take longer because I needed to wait several days in between applications because I tend to have high sensitivity issues.
This added an extra step for me before I even started the whitening treatment. I had to prep my teeth and use the desensitizing gel for 3 days for about 15-30 minutes sessions. I actually did my first desensitizing application on the plane on our way to our two-months trip abroad. My husband and I had a laughing attack during the flight because I was talking with a lisp, and it was hilarious! haha. The gel tastes very similar to the cleaning gel used at a dentist’s office or a very strong toothpaste.
Initially, I had planned to do the three nights in a row and start the treatment right after. However, during the first week of our trip, I was either too tired or completely forgot about it. I know… I know… Hashtag Mom Life.
After a couple of weeks, I restarted the desensitizing gel applications and started the treatment, which was very simple to follow. First, I brushed my teeth without toothpaste. Then, I put 1/4 of the whitening gel in each of the trays and put them in my mouth for 1-3 hours. Then, I brushed as usual with my normal toothpaste. Finally, I put 1/8 of the desensitizing gel in each tray and put them back in my mouth again for 15-20 minutes. I didn’t rinse the leftover gel on my teeth and went straight to bed.
The first whitening application went well. I started with a 45-minutes session while I was watching a TV show, so time actually passed quickly. I increased the time I left the trays in my mouth by 30 minutes with each application, and I always used the desensitizing gel for at least 20 minutes after each whitening session. I actually started noticing a difference after I finished the first few applications, which I wasn’t expecting! I thought it would take longer.
For my first syringe (4 applications), I did it every couple of nights. However, I was having some sensitivity even after using the gel, so I was recommended to give myself more days in between sessions. For the second syringe, I waited 4 days in between treatments, which really helped with the sensitivity.
In between the second and third syringe, I had to take a break. I had been cleaning the excess of gel with a q-tip religiously, but one night I forgot, which caused irritation on my gums. I didn’t really notice until the following day when I was brushing my teeth and I saw some inflammation and redness which was somewhat painful when I brushed. Because I knew it was user error, I took a week and a half break until I knew for sure the irritation was gone.
For the third and fourth syringes, I actually waited between 5 and 6 days in between sessions. Part of it was that I was really busy during the day, so by nighttime, I was too tired to dedicate 2-3 hours to the teeth whitening process. However, I did notice a big difference during this time even though I was not doing the applications as often.
Results and Final Thoughts
I was actually impressed with this whitening system. I liked that I could put the trays in my mouth and just go about my night routine without them interfering with it. Some days, I put them in before doing a hair or face mask and watched TV or listened to a podcast. Other nights, I put them in and cleaned the kitchen or my floors. Overall, the trays did not interfere with any of the activities I would do at night time. Besides talking with a lisp, I did not have any issue with the trays. I really liked that they fitted my teeth perfectly, so they did not move even if I was talking to my husband or son.
Also, while it took me longer than the average person to finish the treatment due to personal circumstances, I noticed improvement almost right away. After finishing the first syringe, I noticed the stains in between my teeth diminishing significantly. I could definitely see a big difference after I completed the treatment. My teeth looked at least one shade whiter than when I started. Even now, three weeks later, the results have stayed the same.
For the duration of the treatment, I avoided many foods that can cause stainings like tomato-based sauces and curries. While it is recommended to not drink coffee or red wine, I did not give them up completely. I don’t drink black coffee anymore so I’d enjoy my morning coffee with creamer or steamed milk. Red wine was also tricky but I managed to drink it only once or twice per week at family dinners. Taking this into account, I must say my results were remarkable and potentially could’ve been better if I had avoided these two food items completely.
When it comes to customer service, I was impressed. Customer service representatives went above and beyond every time I had a question or concern, and I got answers to my inquiries within a reasonable time frame. I got personalized recommendations to avoid irritation and deal with sensitivity, and also got many tips to get the results I was expecting.
Overall, my experience with this product was great.
